My 17yr old granddaughter has been blacking out ,at first for a short duration, but the blackouts are taking longer for her to come round she also is saying she has a taste of Penicillin afterwards in her mouth. She has been going to bed late and is smoking quite a few cigarettes sadly. She has a hospital apt tomorrow thankfully as she is flying abroad, She has just come back from Denmark recently and found the departure on the aircraft caused her to feel dizzy.
I went through your granddaughter history. Few things like 17 years, female, blackouts points towards transient visual obscuration. Most commonly seen in Idiopathic intracranial hypertension in described scenario.
As some aspects are missing from the history like duration of blackout, i.e., if its seconds, minutes and body weight. If blackouts are for few seconds, occurs due to change in posture and your granddaughter is overweight , It's more likely to be IIH.
But can also happen in many case like migraine, anemia, etc. As history is insufficient for me to comment any further. Better contact a physician locally. But its always better to stop smoking in any case.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satish Sharma
