What Can Cause Extreme Itching On Body?

At times I will get extreme itching almost anywhere on my body but mostly on my arms or legs. There is no rash, redness or anything visible and absolutely no pattern that I can detect. It might happen as much as several times in one week and then not for weeks. It just starts to itch and I scratch and scratch. After I scratch for awhile my skin will get red and maybe a little swollen but that goes away after I ve stopped scratching. I have found that putting ice on it can help it. Any ideas of what might be going on?

Itching without a visible rash could suggest an internal ailment. You need to some routine investigations done like liver function test, renal function test, complete blood count, urine routine microscopy and serum Ig E levels.Oral antihistamines like fexofenadine may be started to provide symptomatic relief. Topical Aloe Vera cream may also provide symptomatic relief. Consult your dermatologist regarding the same. Regards
