What Can Cause Pain And Swelling In The Ankle?

I severely sprained my left ankle in 2014 and 2015. I had 9 months of PT. Since then, I’ve had a few minor sprains but nothing significant. Today it started aching extremely, extremely painfully. I was sitting at my desk when this started out of nowhere. It’s an ache, and it is not sharp. It does not feel like an injury, but it’s more painful. It does not hurt to walk on it. Massaging helps a little and there is very very minor swelling. What could this be, and should I make an appt with my PCP tomorrow or wait for my orthopedist to have availability. It’s one of the most painful things I’ve experienced but I don’t know what my PCP can do. I do not want painkillers.

Hi,

Sudden onset pain is ankle of severe nature is unlikely to be due to old sprain.

When there are no local signs like swelling or redness then, in my opinion, this pain could be due to pressure on the nerves, likely to arise from the lower back.

I suggest you get MRI of the lumbar spine or consult your orthopaedic surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
