Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been experiencing a rapid heart beat approx 85 bpm when I wake up at around 2AM. This happens when I drink alcohol Approx 1cocktail and 2 glasses of wine. This happens maybe 3 times a week no discomfort. I am 76 years old no history of heart disease
Intake of alcohol could cause alterations in cardiac activity due to fluid redistribution. You need to limit your intake of alcohol.
A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. Hence, 85 beats per minute should not be considered as abnormal.
However, considering your age, kindly get your blood pressure checked along with an Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Echocardiogram to make sure there are no abnormalities with your cardiac system.
