What Can Cause Swollen Cheeks And Jaws With Headache And Body Pain?

My friend and next door neighbor is a long time alcoholic and going cold turkey the past few days following a heavy bout of drinking. He is mobile but has fallen down and is unable to walk any great distance. He has had nothing but water or fruit juices the past two days. What disturbes me is that, unlike other times, he is complaining of a very very bad headache and pain all over his body, especially in the joints. Further his cheeks and jaw are so swollen that he hardly looks like the same person. This is a symptom I have never seen before. Should I insist that he seek medical help? What is causing the swollen face?

Hello,

Your friend is having facial swelling, severe headache, joint pain and general weakness. Facial swelling could be due to soft tissue injury or fracture of facial bone (mandible or maxillary bone). It needs evaluation by X-ray or CT face. He must consult emergency doctor for it. Severe headache, after fall, could be due to concussion, skull bone fracture or intracranial bleed. It should not be ignored. It also needs emergency consultation.

Joint pain and general weakness are due to injury, lack of nutrition or water in body, fever due to injury. Overall, your friend needs medical help. He will be advised CT head and face to find injuries. For treatment, he will be prescribed painkillers, antacids or few other medications depending upon his CT findings. Meanwhile, at home, you can ask him to take rest, drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol completely, take tab Diclofenac, tab Pantoprazole after prescription and apply ice pack at injury site.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
