What Can Cause Tingling Sensation On The Back And Legs After A Sugery For Kidney Stone Removal?

I just turned 60 and have always been in good health until this past year (several contributing factors over the past ten years).

Some background..
I had stones in both kidneys. Surgery was required last summer to remove a large stone in one kidney. I have recently put on about 4o lbs in two months, I think. The sympton I am writing about is my skin (back, bottom, back of legs) feels like pins and needles the past few days. I have been putting on moisterizer which helps but is not alleviating the symptoms.

My doctor recently put me on medications (first time in my life), Simvastin 40mg 1 each day; Metoprolo Tartrate 25mg 1 twice each day; Sertrlene 25mg - I started 1 per day and have been doubling that for several weeks now (doctors orders).

Any ideas? I am very uncomfortable.

Hi,

I have just read your query. Based on what you have explained and the drugs you are taking I assume you are hypertensive. I believe the drug you mentioned as "Sertrlene 25 mg" is Sertraline an SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.)

1) Is your pain increases after taking Sertraline? Then it could be a condition called restless leg syndrome which is seen in a patient with a renal disorder and which causes tingling numbness and can be aggravated by it.
2) If it started immediately post surgery then it could be a pinched/injured sensory nerve root during anesthesia which causes it.
3) Diabetes has to be ruled out since it causes neuropathy which exactly matches your symptoms.

For time being follow the below points:
1) Use warm socks at night before sleep.
2) Have a mild to moderate physical activity in the evening.
3) Relieve stress with meditation or any relaxation techniques
4) Take a B12 supplement.

If it's severe then discuss this with a neurologist, he will conclude and treat you with the appropriate medication after ruling out the cause.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Moses John Wesley,
