Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What can happen if I take Plavix with Celebrex? I had been on Celebrex for approximately 10 years for arthritis in spine, wrists, knees, etc. I had 95% blockages in both carotids w/bilateral Endarterectomies 2 1/2 years ago. Ultrasound 2 months ago revealed 60-69% RE stenosis of one carotid due to neointimal hyperplasia. A few weeks ago I went off Celebrex due to lumbar spine fusion . Is it safe to go back on Celebrex? (I have several bruises on extremities.)
Celebrex and other anti-inflammatories like it are associated with a slightly increased risk of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack or stroke, and since you would already be at higher risk for these problems because of your known vascular disease, Celebrex should only be used if there is no reasonable alternative.
However, if there is no reasonable alternative, using an anti-inflammatory such as Celebrex is acceptable, and Celebrex would be one of the preferred medications because it has less risk of GI bleeding. The use of both Celebrex and Plavix can increase the risk of GI bleeding such as in the stomach, and so taking a medication to help protected the stomach, such as a PPI medication like omeprazole, may be recommended.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
