What Cause Motion Sickness?

I never have motion sickness. This past week, I traveled to Europe and was doing ok with the flight there. But i took a river cruise and start to feel like I have motion sickness. Also on the flight back, I feel motion sickness as well. I have been 2 days, I still feel dizzy and nauseous. Can you tell me why I have this problem?

Hello and welcome to HCM. I fully understand your concern and I will try to write in a understandable way since you are asking to explain what a motion sickness is.

It is a disturbance of the inner ear (part of our balance system) that is caused by repeated motion. The symptoms are a consequence of changes in sense of balance. Anyone can suffer in some point of their life from motion sickness. So you don't have to be worry about it.

I would like to give you some recommendation to prevent or lessen the severity of motion sickness.
- Do nit sit facing backwards from direction of travel
- Sometimes it helps to keep your gaze fixed on the horizon or on a fixed point
- Avoid strong food odors
- Some over the counter medication are very effective in preventing motion sickness for short trips, like meclizine for example.

Treatment of motion sickness is less effective than preventing it. I would recommend cinnarizine or dimenhydrinate as antihistamine medication. Regarding nausea I would recommend metoclopramide. Also caffeine might have alleviating effects.

I hope my answer was helpful. Best regards
