What Caused Asphyxiation After Administering Propofol?
During a colonoscopy using Propofol, I stopped breathing, my body spasmed and my mouth couldn t be opened because because it was frozen shut . Finally an airway was opened through my nostrils. I was coughing and aspirated part of a capsule I had ingested before surgery. Now I am told if I get an upper respiratory infection that I must immediately be put on antibiotics or I will be susceptible to pneumonia. IL was also told that I shouldn t be afraid of being sedated with Propofol again. I was extremely lucky because my surgery team knew what to do and did it quickly. What are your thoughts on this? PS: I would NEVER use Propofol again.
Hello, Thanks for trusting HCM. Sorry that you had such a bad experience, and yes you were lucky the surgical team noticed and did interfere quickly. Propofol usually leads to muscle relaxations but no spams but your body might have reacted in a way for the shortness of breath you endured after administering the Propofol. This you have to always report for any medical team performing any guide of procedure on you. Plus get allergy test propofol has some ingredients that might provoke allergies. Hope that helps. Dr. Ahmad
