Hi
Thank you for asking Health Care Majic.
I really appreciate your concern regrading brother's health.
my name is Dr Ehsan and have gone through your query about your brother's condition
Brief answer:
There are several conditions which are associated with this night time urination which include
A) Life style habits
and
B) some medical issues...
Detailed Answer:
A)Life style habits which cause Excessive urination :
1-Drinking too much fluid before bedtime specially
coffee, caffeinated beverages, alcohol
2. Disturbed sleep which may be due to some stress or medical condition itself like
obstructive sleep apnea (a condition in which breathing is interrupted or stops many times during sleep) and you have already told about his COPD. and his weight is 300lbs and being overweight is another cause for sleep apnea
so by modifying these habits like avoiding excessive fluid intake before bedtime, weight reduction, and avoiding stress, the condition will be better if not due to medical issues.
B) . some medical issues leading to night time excessive urination:
there are certain medical conditions related to Prostate gland and urinary tract
1) with age , men's prostate gland enlarges due to body's chemical changes which we call hormonal changes and this leads to problems with urination like excessive urination, interrupted urinations, night time urination.
2) there are certain
urinary bladder conditions which lead to this situation like
Bladder /
Urinary tract infection,
Bladder obstruction
Bladder overactivity
Bladder inflammation (swelling)
Interstitial cystitis (pain in the bladder)
Bladder malignancy
what you need to do :
1).Preventive life style measures as mentioned already
2). Consult nearest GP , he will go through complete evaluation like history , examination of the patient and may do some Labs like urine analysis and
Ultrasonography. after that he will decide whether to start treatment or your brother needs refferal to
Urologist for further work up.
well, you mentioned one thing more
as
difficult time breathing after he comes back to bed ... this may be due to generalized weakness, or may be as a consequence of COPD which also needs work up and evalution. this breathing problem must be mentioned when visiting GP.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
