Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. My 74 year old father was just diagnosed with abnormal gait. His voice is getting softer, but not impaired, he has trouble sleeping through the night, he has a shuffled walk and one arm does not swing as much as the other. He also feels spacey when he walks or stands. Is this Parkinson t disease?
You may be right. Given your father's symptoms and age, he may have Parkinson's disease. If so, he may also have tremors (as if he is rolling pills in fingers). Sleep disturbance and depression may also occur in Parkinson's. There are several causes for Parkinson's symptoms: medications (such as antipsychotics), repeated head injury, metabolic, toxins, nervous system disorders (such as multiple system atrophy, Lewy Body Dementia). You should take him to a doctor for proper treatment. The doctor will try to find any cause that can be removed. He/she will then educate your father about his condition and institute a treatment plan. I hope this answer is helpful.
