What Causes A Creaking Sound In Ear?

What is the creaking sound I m hearing in my ears? The past couple days I have had a creaking sound in my ears. It sounds like rubber or walking on a creaky floorboard. I usually don t notice it when I m busy doing something, but when I sit down I notice it almost every time I move my jaw or my head.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The symptom you mention is clearly indicating a condition known as ' EUSTACHIAN TUBE DYSFUNCTION '

In this condition eustachian tube (tube which connect upper throat to middle ear and balance pressure of middle ear) get blocked due to various conditions like :-
- Common cold , sinus ,ear or throat infection.
- Allergy .
- Air travel .
- Sometimes due to fluid present in ear.

When we do opening and closing of mouth the blocked tube open and then block again which produces sound. Symptoms go away in few days without treatment or by blowing air after deep breath with closed mouth and nostrils .

If symptoms persist then consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and to rule out conditions like middle ear infection .

Doctor may prescribe decongestants , anti histamine nasal sprays or antibiotics for a week.

Doctor may implant pressure equalizer tube of give small incision on ear drum.

hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
