What Causes A Dark Patch On Toenail Of A Metal Inserted Toe?

My mum has diabetes and years ago had a metal bit inserted into her toe as she had a enlarged toe joint. The last few months her toe nail has developed a roundish dark patch. Her doctor hinted at it could be cancer under the toe nail. Can you help shed some light?

Hi. The dark spot on toenail could be resolving hematoma (collection of bloof after trauma), fungal infection and melanoma (cancer) among others. Clinical examination and histopathology (if needed) would help in establishing the diagnosis. Further managment depends on diagnosis made. Hope it answers your queries
