What Causes A High Fever With Headache And Sore Throat In Children?

My 9 year old daughter had a 103.5 fever with a bad headache last night, it broke, but came back. I gave her motrin, and it came down to 99.4. It seems to be rising again, and she seems to have no other symptoms, other than a bad headache. She said her throat was a bit sore last night, but no longer.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello. Thank you for your question. Sore throats and headaches, with or without fever, often go together in this age group. the most common cause is a virus which takes a few days to go away. No treatment necessary. However, sometimes this can be due to bacteria and require antibiotic. If the symptoms are resolving we can leave her alone. If not, I recommend consulting with your doctor so the correct diagnosis can be made and the appropriate treatment plan implemented.
