What Causes A Lump Like Feeling In The Throat When Diagnosed With GERD?

Hello. I m a 54y/o woman. I have been diagnosed with hiatal hernia with GERD many years ago. I took Protonix for about 2yrs but was taken off the med. I haven t really had any problems, but lately I have a frequent feeling like a large lump in my throat. It is intermittent and could happen anytime, on an empty stomach or after a meal. I want to swallow constantly to try to relieve this feeling but it doesn t go away until it s just gone. Antacids do no help. Maybe I should start on the Protonix again? Is this feeling related to the hernia?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
It is natural to think that feeling of lump in throat is related to hiatal hernia and GERD. But it is not always true.
Hence I would advise you the following:
First of all, consult an ENT Surgeon for doing ENT Endoscopy to see if there is any lump or disease that is giving you the feeling of lump in throat and if present get treated accordingly.
If the study is normal then this may possibly be related to GERD and thus Protonix should help. Continue antacid and get started on a motility regulator like Domperidone also.
Stick to small frequent meals of soft and bland diet.
No alcohol and no smoking.
Also important is control of stress and anxiety.
Get an Upper GI Endoscopy to know the present status of hiatus hernia and GERD and associated problems.
