What Causes A Missed Period With Negative Pregnancy Test?

in january of 2012 my period. Was very light I was spotting for 4 days , didn't have to use a tampon our even panty liner. That was around the tenth. (of january) now that it is february 20th no sign of my period still. I have a few pregnancy symptoms also. About two weeks ago I took home tests they were all negative. I wonder if I might have been taking them too soon? Does it sound like I may be pregnant?
