What Causes A Painless Reddish Bruise In The Knee?

I have a painless purple/reddish bruise in my knee about the size of a dime. I dont bruise easily even when hurt in any kind of way. I have not bumped it, to my memory. It's not painful to touch and doesn't change color when i mash it. Why might this happen? When should i see a doctor?
