What Causes A Sudden Episode Of High BP, Fainting Sensation And Swelling In The Ankles?

I have hbp. Today I experienced an unpleasant episode that I ve not had in the past at any time. I became very faint, and my ankles are swollen. My bp went up (from my normal 130ish/70) to 165/90. It has dropped to 147/90 over the course of 6 hours and a nap. I have taken my meds, but I m concerned. Should I consider a trip to the er tomorrow? My regular GP is 100 miles away in Portland, ME. We live in a rural area and the nearest er is an hour away. I don t want to alarm my husband, but we are 73 years old, and if I need to go, I ll do it rather than die in the kitchen. Not good form.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM.
If there was no injury then the most common cause are heart or kidneys disease.

Ankles that swell in the evening could be a sign of retaining salt and water because of right-sidedheart failure. Kidney disease can also cause foot and ankle swelling. Whenkidneys are not functioning properly, fluid can build up in the body.

Liver disease can affect the liver's production of a protein called albumin, which keeps the blood from leaking out of the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues. Inadequate albumin production can lead to fluid leakage.

Gravity causes fluid to accumulate more in the feet and ankles, but fluid can also accumulate in the abdomen and chest. If your swelling is accompanied by other symptoms, including fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight gain, see your doctor right away and do additional tests.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
