What Causes Absent Fetal Heart Rate During Pregnancy?

When I went for an ultra sound last Tuesday, the doctor told me I was 7 weeks 2 days pregnant and there was a heartbeat. The next day I started bleeding. I went back on Friday, and there was still heartbeat, but I continued bleeding. I went back today, and there is no longer a heartbeat. The dr. recommended a D & C. Could he be wrong?

I have gone through your query and am very sorry for what had happened. Your doctor is mostly right because the follow up sonogram results, the clinical picture of persistent bleeding and the disappearance of the heart beat point to a missed pregnancy. This can happen many-a-time, especially with the first pregnancy. Causes can be several including genetic defects, hormone deficiencies, infections, trauma etc. Since you are 7+ weeks pregnant, you can ask for an induced medical abortion with a follow up sonogram.
