Hi. I have a question about mental illness. Recently when Im at the gym a man in his sixties is always there. The man has a reputation for being extremely rude and childish. I had never had problems with him but recently whenever he makes eye contact with me he will burp really loudly like he is taunting me than just goes on about his business like nothing happened. Even if I go near him after he does it, he carries on like if Im not even there. Today it really annoyed me because it feels like he is doing it on purpose to annoy me but not even a second after he did it he just casually went about his stretching routine. Is he mentally ill or just a jerk trying to get a reaction from me?
Hello and thank you for your question. It is impossible to know whether he is mentally ill, suffering from dementia or just a rude person. In any case the best thing to do is just to ignore him and avoid eye contact. Sometimes older people that are losing their memory from dementia lose the normal inhibitions that keep us from being rude in public. Just avoid him and know that it is not about you, it is his problem. Regards
