What Causes Allergic Reaction Rashes After Parotidectomy?

Hi, I had a 55mm mass and tissue taken from my parotidectomy and also over half the gland. I have very sensitive skin. My surgeon on my external suture removing visit thought I may be reacting/allergic to the sutures. I had the surgey 3.5 weeks ago. I have now got an allergic reaction rash that is very tender all around the surgical site which extends from above my ear around my ear and to half way down my neck. The rash looks like big acne pimples. Only clear fluid comes out and despite elecon 1% cream they aren t getting better. It s painful and embarrassing. Could I be allergic/reacting to the internal disolvable sutures?? Thanks.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. It seems that you have developed postoperative infection to the surgical site which is the reason of appearance of the blisters and fluid discharge from them.

I would recommend you to go again for the follow up appointment to the surgeon who operated you for examination of the progression of healing and go for culture of the fluid that is coming out of the blisters. This culture will show what bacteria are present in the blisters and what antibiotics can work against them. Based on the test reports, you might need to start antibiotic treatment.

If it was an allergic reaction, it would have surely responded to the cream you have been prescribed. Bacterial infections would not respond to that cream.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you recover soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
