ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your mother's problem and I have had several patients coming to me with this problem.
When a person develops a stroke, blood flow to certain parts of the brain gets cut off and that area of the brain is damaged. In your mother the area dealing with the sense of smell is involved. Your mother has developed an altered perception of the odor. This is called parosmia. It is not an allergy. When the damage is repaired the parosmia would improve. It may take some time depending on the extent of damage.
I shall be happy to answer if you have further queries.
Wish your mother a quick recovery.
