What Causes Ammonia Odor Sensation?

Hi. Im 46 yo male. About 8 months ago i began to have a strong ammonia sensation/odor early in the morning while sleeping. It is not every morning, but seems to occur about once a week or so. It is so strong at times that it affects my overall sense of smell which seems to become hypersensitive. The odor/sensation seems to come in little bursts, about once a minute or so, and it can last anywhere from a couple hours to all day, but fades as im up/awake and the day goes by. I was a very heavy drinker since 18, but stopped because of this. Yet, the sensation/odor attacks are still occuring. Any ideas on this??? Thank you.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Abnormal perception of smell may result from a blood disorder or the withdrawal from alcohol. Get a basic blood work done.
Use a few drops of nasal saline several times a day and inhale steam; avoid smoking and exposure to dust and fumes.
By itself it doesn't suggest anything serious but it could get very troublesome and worsened by stress- you could give yoga or meditation a try.
