What Causes Ankles Swelling With Radiation To The Toes?

My 80 year old fathers ankles are both swollen. It is swollen around the ankle and working down towards his toes. The toes are not swollen, just above them. I am concerned it maybe his blood flow to his heart. They have been for only swollen about 1 day. Should I take him to walk in tomorrow, or see if the swelling comes down. How long should I wait before taking him to doctors?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
If it is swollen since one day then there is no need to be in panic. I would recommend you to first get his blood pressure measured. If it is high then I would recommend you to control the blood pressure as if it is high then it will put more pressure on heart and heart is not able to pull blood from the keg and foot causing swelling.
Other cause can be low protein in body so water get out of the blood vessels and causing edema, it can be checked with serum albumin level. I would also recommend you to avoid taking painkiller.
