Lately after a couple of drinks and usually but not always with rich food I wake up 1-2 hours after I go to sleep with what feels like an anxiety attach. My heart is racing, I am shivering with the chills, my stomach is sick and I will have diarrhea. Any ideas what is causing this and if I should be worried?
Alcohol is a nervous system depressant that interacts with several chemicals in the brain that damp down activity. When it goes away, the brain speeds back up and normal regulation of its activity is messed up. Tremor, increased blood pressure, heightened startle reflex are pretty universally increased if a moderate or higher amount of alcohol is taken then wears off. These are not bad by themselves but can be present in someone who's alcohol intake isn't regulated. Signs: taking a LOT of alcohol, feeling the need to cut down or other people telling you that you should Winding up in medical or legal trouble or relationship trouble because of it. yeah, that's mainly it.
