What Causes Anxiety, Breathlessness And Rapid Heart Rate?

Hi. i am 33 year old female, had my last baby about a yr. ago. Have had some issues since shortly after. 1st i was having dizziness. had a thyroid test and was normal with tsh being 1.3. Over the last 6 months have developed increased anxiety that seems cyclical in nature. I began seeing a new dr. and she retested my thyroid. tsh was 5.3 and free t4 was wnl. I have tried some ssri's without total relief and am thinking now this has to due with my thyroid, although i really thought i had symptoms of overactive thyroid such as anxiety, breathlessness, rapid hr, things like that. can i have these symptoms with hypothyroid. also my dr. started me on the bcp to ?? regulate hormones. Any advice or thoughts??

Hello,

If the thyroid function is normal the next thing is to exclude supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Dizziness, rapid heart rate, anxiety, and breathlessness are common signs of SVT. SVT is an abnormal heart rhythm that occurs when an abnormal rhythm results in a regular but rapid heartbeat (150-200/min) that starts and stops abruptly. Sometimes the condition is misdiagnosed as anxiety or panic disorders. SVT has many forms:
-Paroxysmal SVT, AV node tachycardia etcetera. Most cases of SVT are not considered to be health threatening but frequent and longer episodes should be treated.
-The diagnosis starts with ECG but ECG is abnormal only during the episode of SVT but still may give additional information.
-Continuous heart monitoring (Holter) will also be conducted to catch the episode of SVT.
-Eventually, electrophysiologic studies may be required to identify the type of SVT. Please, see your doctor to get ECG and Holter to confirm the diagnosis of SVT.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Malik
