What Causes Asthma And Allergy After Using Prednisone Tablets?
I have recently had nasal polyp removal surgery. I was taking prednisone for two years leading up to surgery anywhere from 5 mg to at the most 50mg. Since not taking prednisone I have developed asthma type symptoms. Started taking Advair twice a day with Ventaline as required. 10 days ago. I am still not able to walk up a flight of stairs without being winded. Prior to all this before nasal surgery while on prednisone I was able to jog walk 5 kilometres plus twice a day. Could it be that I am having a reaction to the antibiotic doxycycline that I am still on since surgery? Do I have asthma and it was being masked by the prednisone for a few years? Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed.
It is not likely a reaction to the antibiotic. This would not normally present in this way.
It is possible that the asthma was masked by the continued use of the steroid and the symptoms are now presenting. You should rule out other causes of shortness of breath such as anemia, heart disease, other lung disease.
This would require examination, a full blood count, possible chest x ray and cardiac assessment.
I hope this helps
