What Causes Awful Smell In Urine And Urgent Requirement For Urination?
Hi, my dad is 83 years old has an enlarged prostate, today I noticed that he has an awful smell to his urine. It is strong with a fishy-ammonia smell. The color is darker yellow. He has had a couple of urinary infections in the past. And also has problems with frequent urination and bleeding after urinating. He says he doesn't hurt or burn, but when he has to urinate it is very urgent

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Your dad's problem is most likely urinary infection. It can be due to accumulation of post voidal urine because of enlarged prostate. You should get a urine routine examination and culture to rule out that. In such case i advise empirical antibiotic therapy like norfloxacin initially and change antibiotic after culture report if necessary. Prostate enlargement should be assessed by ultrasound and can be managed by drugs like tamusulosin and dutasteride. Hope this may help you. Let me know if you have any further queries.
