What Causes Black Bowel Movements?

I have had black stools for the past week, on & off. Out of nowhere. At first I thought it was because of the chocolate I ve been bingeing on. When I stopped eating the chocolate, the dark black stools continue. I am 75 yrs old, have serious COPD & take oxycodone (10 mg) X 5 daily for pain from hematoma 6 yrs ago. Still, I haven t had any black stools. I m not certain which kind of doctor to see. I have a list of 10 specialists whom I see. I have found that the physicians here in the NW are very little help. Perhaps I have a higher standard, coming from back East -- where symptoms were explored & solutions found. Not here. Any suggestions? Thanks, Cynthia M. Pramuk 425-967-5669

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You may have small intestinal or gastric bleeding. May be because of gastric/duodenal ulcers or if you are a chronic drinker then variceal bleed may cause black stool. You can consult a gastroenterologist or a surgeon.

Hope this will help you.

Thank you.
