What Causes Black Color Stool While Taking Iron Tablets?

hi my nan is on iron tablets 3 times a day she is 86 years old and when she goings to the toilet her poo is black and even when she go's for a wee and wipes her self its still black and most times have to wash her self ever time she go's to the toilet, her poo is very soft and runny so i was just wondering what is happening?
