What Causes Black Stools In Patients Post Umbilical Hernia Repair Surgery?
yes i just had an imbilical hernia repair with incarserated bowel they tucked back in place then repaired hernia..2 days after surgery i am having black stools that have a stringy look..my bowel movements were soft before that but normal looking..i have IBS..what might be causing these black stools?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Black stool indicate one of the following: Bleeding in GI tract. Iron consumption in excess. Since you had incarcerated hernia that was pushed back the commonest reason I can think about is bleeding from the obstructed segment of hernia. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Do not take anything orally. Rush to your Hospital for investigations: Blood for hematocrit and other tests. Test of stool for blood and occult blood. X-ray of the abdomen in standing position. CT Scan of the abdomen. Diagnostic laparoscopy, procedure as required, colonoscopy and upper GI Endoscopy may be needed. Further management as per the cause found.
