What Causes Black Under Eye?

I was at work & looked in a mirror and saw my left eye looked like I had a black eye. I had not been hit or hit anything. Started between nose & corner of eye. Now has spread slightly to under eye/cheek. No pain, not sensitive to touch, eyesight OK. Any ideas?
