What Causes Bleeding After Contraceptive Injection For 5 Years?

I have been on the contraceptive injection for 5 years and have never had a period or bled. However I have suddenly started getting breakthrough bleeding. This started 48 hours ago and has continued - not heavy just spotting and brownish in colour. Should I be worried? I ha been with the same partner for 5 years

OBGYN, Maternal and Fetal Medicine 's  Response
Hi, I have gone through your question. Breakthrough bleeding is a common side-effect of progesterone contraceptive injections. It is usually slight and can occur after any time of starting these injections. However, since these injections also do have a small failure rate in contraception, I would suggest you to to get a urine pregnancy test. If it is negative, do consult your OBGYN specialist to get properly examined to rule out any lesion in the genital tract which may also cause such bleeding.
Hope this answers your question.
Wishing you good health.
