What Causes Bleeding In The Stools?

I am 40 year old man, I have been taking medication for BP for last 4 years(tenaclour 25/50 for first 2 years and LOASR-H for last 2 years) and minimum medicines for type 2 diabites for one year.

My concern:

1. I noticed blood in my stool coupule of years back and now again 2 days back... only two incidents till now and in both the cases one common factor i can recall is having strong coffee... can drinking coffe cause this?

2.Also I had my ears operated for fungul infection 3 years back. on second day of operation, I felt severly constipated(as maybe only glucose diet previous day and hence was forcing myself during passing stool, but blood started ozzing pit of my nose and ears... it also stopped within couple of m inutes.

R these serious issues and need to be checked.

Please advise

Thanx in advance

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In most cases, causes of abdominal pain and bleeding through rectum are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. It is very important to take lot of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered.

Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
