What Causes Bloating, Constipation And Diarrhea?

I am a 62 year old male and have lived with GERD all my life. My symptoms are well controlled with an OTC Prilosec and I get routine EGDs to check for Barret s. Just over 4 years ago I had my right colon removed and recovered nicely. all was good until about a year ago when I began experiencing bloating, constipation, diarrhea and a general ill feeling. Over the last year, I have undergone, (in order) blood work, Urinalysis, a radio graphic enema, colonoscopy, Ultrasound, CT scan, EGD with biopsies of my duodenum and gastric lining and all was okay. Finally I underwent a HIDA scan which indicated a diseased gallbladder. A few weeks later, my gallbladder was removed and I thought my symptoms would end. My gallbladder was removed about 4 weeks ago and I m still not feeling well. I have okay days but sometimes can t get comfortable at night and regularly don t feel like eating. My question is: How long does it take the body (digestive system) to adjust to your gallbladder being removed? A typical day for me is to eat a cup of yogart around 6:30am then a banana, grapes or something light around 9:00am. At lunch, I have some soup or a lean cuisine type dish around 11:30am. My afternoon is spent feeling somewhat bloated and/or experience mild to moderate nausea and an overall general ill feeling. I don t feel like eating anything else the rest of the day but on occasion I may eat a 1/2 of baked potato for dinner or just skip dinner altogether. I feel best from 9:00pm until about 4am. I just want to regain my appetite and lose the digestive discomfort I feel over 50 percent of a 24 hour period (every day). I have a follow up with my primary care doctor the end of the month. Any questions I should ask?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Constipation and diarrhea is in relation with intestine flora disturbances via bile release from liver. Around 3 to 4 weeks time period is sufficient to recover from all the symptoms related to gallbladder after its removal. In your case, I recommend to control stress, dietary precautions, and supportive medications to control the issue faster.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
