Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Blood In Stomy Bag After Colon And Rectum Removal?
My brother had a complete colon and rectum removal with ilestomy about 20 years ago. He has not had any problems since then, but recently has had blood in the stomy bag. Since he has not seen a gastro in several years, he has to go as a new patient, which requires a delay of 7 weeks before he can be seen. His symptoms, to me, seem to require quicker attention. Is there any concern for a delay in seeing a doctor?
Dear Friend, Its emergency if its bleeding in colostomy bag, if its fresh blood it may be due to trauma or mucocutaneous separation, some time it may be peristomal varices,& if its mixed with stool dark coloured/coffee coloured it may be upper GI bleed and need gastro consultation and need endoscopy to rule out and serious problem, mean while if its bleeding too much you can start Etamsylate (Alstat or Etamsilat or Etamsylatum,)500 mg twice or thrice a day as per need, and amount of bleeding.
