What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge After Taking Plan B?

I had unprotected sex about a week ago, I was on birth control but since I hadn t take it at the same time every day, I freaked out and took Plan B about 40 hours after the incident. Today, I was supposed to get my period. I had cramps this morning but all I m getting is a brown discharge. Is that normal? Is that my period?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Taking plan B around 40 hours after sexual contact provides you with 85% protection from conception, this added with your birth control status (albiet irregular), will certainly help prevent pregnancy.

The brown discharge could be due to:

+Side effect of plan B (common)
+Early period stimulated by the plan B
+Inter-menstrual bleeding (also a side effect of plan B)

Please speak to your doctor if at all you continue to experience menstrual irregularities.

Best wishes.
