What Causes Change In Consistency Of Menstrual Period?
I am 53 and my last 2 periods have had lots of what looks like thin pieces of beige flaky tissue and at other times dark, gritty blood (maybe lots of old tiny clots) that look like dark red coffee grounds. Also the odour of the blood is stronger. is it normal for the consistency and odour to change that much close to menopause?
Hello, Thanks for trusting us with your health concern. All sorts of abnormal menstrual pattern is observed as the hormone production dwindles towards menopause. From the description you have given, it appears that you are shedding endometrial casts along with old altered blood. If the odor is like a fishy smell or that of rotten eggs, infection should be suspected and investigated. I would suggest a routine gynecological assessment along with a pap smear, blood counts, urinalysis and a sonogram of the pelvis in the trans-vaginal route to plan further management. Hope this helps.
