What Causes Chest Pain And Breathing Difficulty When Suffering From Pleurisy?

my son (21 yr old) was diagnosed with pleurisy a year and a half ago. He was and is very active. Ever since the pleurisy he has been unable to run with out chest pain and feeling short of breath. The doctors think that maybe he has exercise induced asthma. He didn t have that before the pleurisy. Could the pleurisy have done damage to his lungs?

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your son's situation and problem.
Yes, you are right. Pleurisy can cause permanent damage to the lungs.
It is actually an inflammation. And if inflammation is stayed long , then it can cause permanent lung changes and give rise to bronchitis.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Repeat chest x ray
2. PFT (pulmonary function test).
Chest x ray is needed to rule out pleurisy.
PFT Ia needed to rule out bronchitis.
It is also helpful in diagnosing exercise induced asthma.
So better to consult pulmonologist and first diagnose him and then start appropriate treatment.
