What Causes Chills, Fever And Back Pain While Having Myelodysplastic Syndrome?
My 78 year old mom has MDS. she is self sufficient but gets transfusions every 3 weeks or so and now needs platelets. she never took chemo. tonight she called and said that she had gotten chills, then fever of 102 and has back pain. she plans to take some antibiotics, eat something and call me in the morning. If she gets worse she said she would go to the hospital. She will call me in the morning.
the symptoms you mentioned are not very specific. Many diseases (mostly infections) may present like this. Common infectious diseases include influenza or other viral diseases and upper urinary tract infections. The latter usually also present with rigors. I can't tell which one is more likely because a careful clinical examination is needed and perhaps laboratory tests. Clinical signs of sepsis (a serious condition that may accompany infections) include tachypnea (more than 20 breaths/minute), tachycardia (more than 100 beats/minute), shortness of breath and faintness (low blood pressure). Low blood pressure may present with cold sweats, faintness, sleepiness etc. If she has any of the above then she needs immediate medical attention. I hope I've helped! If you need further guidance then please provide more details about her condition and I'll be glad to help more.
