What Causes Chronic Dull Pain At Base Of Tongue And Bad Breath?

Hi Doctor, I am a 43 year old Male, Mediterranean origin. Light smoker and moderate drinker (only red wine). I have symptoms in the right side of my mouth which have continued over the past year. Initially it seemed to be coming from my teeth as my molar was always in pain. Over the past twelve months that tooth has been root canalled, crowned and finally removed. My wisdom tooth has also been root canalled. The tooth pain has now gone but the underlying pain which I though was caused by my teeth remain. It is a dull pain and seems to originate from the area around the tonsil or base of the tongue. I also have a slightly enlarged lymph node (as shown in an ultrasound from August 2014). The pain comes and goes at a rate of about 1 to 2 weeks a month. When it comes I also have night sweats and insomnia but I guess that might be stress. 10 months ago I had a CT scan and an MRI neither of these showed any problems to my neck/throat. I have no fever, fatigue or blood in my saliva. Whatever the problem is it seems to also be affecting my lingual nerve and alveolar nerve. It s fair to say that at this stage I’m starting to get a little (a lot) worried this is some kind of oral cancer. Other symptoms are thick/sour saliva when the dull pain occurs, feeling clammy, bad breath and sore upper back muscles. I have been to ENT and 3 Doctors over the last 12 months but none have been of any help. Any ideas before I go mad? Thanks.

Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query.
As far as the pain in the base of the tongue or floor of the mouth associated with thick saliva and bad breath can be because of the sialadinitis secondary to stone in the salivary gland duct or secondary to bacterial or viral infection. The bad breath can be because of the pus discharge secondary to the above said causes and gum infection.
Nothing to worry much, it is not cancer, consult a good oral physician and get it evaluated. Once it is diagnosed, we can treat accordingly.
I hope my answer will help you, take care.
