What Causes Clicking And Crunching Sounds In The Kneecap?

I fell 9 months ago, no warning, landed hard on knees on marble floor. Right knee swelled much more than left and continues to hurt constantly, have sharp stabbing pains just beneath the center of the kneecap and has now developed clicking and crunching sounds (can actually feel the crunching). What happened to my knee?
