Hi,I am Dr. Robert Galamaga (Hematologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I'm an 18 year old female who gave blood for the 4th time in 2 years at my school. The third time I did it, I passed out because I didn't eat anything before I donated. This last time there were complications. I found out first year students were sticking me with a needle after they tore up my vein. Apparently I wasn't bleeding fast enough and I guessed it was because I was cold or they might have missed the vein. I had never had problems before this. My blood clotted this time in the bag and I was told I couldn't give. Now I have a softball sized bruise and a golfball sized mass under my skin near the puncture site. I'm concerned about what it is. I've been told it could b a clott that will dissolve and I've also been told it could he an air bubble. It only hurts if a lot of pressure is put on it but the bruising and such makes me look like I shoot up and I scoop ice cream for a living currently and that scares customers. Please tell me what this mass is. I've had it for a little over a week since the donation
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. Blood clot formation after blood donation is normal. Sometimes, bleeding can occur into internal tissues due to excessive trauma or vein being missed during phlebotomy could cause this. 2. This hematoma would take around 2-3 weeks to disappear. Not to worry. 3. Its not a air bubble, as air would have got absorbed by now. Its clotted blood or hematoma. You can apply low molecular weight heparin superficially to increase thrombolysis. Do not worry. Get a complete hemogram and hemostasis profile evaluation to rule out risk of thrombosis disorder. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
