What Causes Cold Sores All Over The Lower Part Of The Face?

I have had a outbreak of cold sores but they have covered my top lip and bottom lip, also chin and nose. They have now turned a yellow colour and are very painful. Also my thumb nails have indents in them near the cuticle area. I m starting to panic a bit. Should I worry?

Hi,

It sounds that you have an infection in the skin of your face, that is impetigo. It also could be that the cold sore (herpes infection) spread to your lower face, especially if you have other problems like eczema or are immunocompromised. It needs to be treated as soon as possible! It also is probably infectious, so wash your hands with soap and water after touching it and avoid giving it to other people. Treatment can be successful with a topical antibiotic cream. If needed, you may have to take antibiotics internally for a few days to clear it up.

Also I would suggest you put a few layers of muslin or a washcloth soaked in betadine solution or just black tea or chamomile tea on the sores to remove the crusts and then apply the antibiotic cream. Soak those cloths in bleach solution or boil them in water for more than 20 min if you plan to re-use them or throw them in the garbage (to avoid infecting others).

And don't forget to wash your hands and all surfaces that came in contact with the cloth or the fluid with soap or dish detergent afterwards. If it doesn't get better within a few days or continues spreading, make sure to visit your physician to have it looked at and treated with a prescription-strength medicine. Also try not to scratch the lesions as this may cause scarring later on.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

All the best!

Regards,
Christine
