What Causes Cold Sweats Followed By Confusion And Fatigue?

My mother is 76 years old and has many health conditions. Lately, she has been having episode when she breaks into a cold sweat, becomes very pale, has difficulty thinking or expressing thought, is almost lethargic and so fatigued she can t stay awake. Sometimes she also has pain in her upper back somewhere in the middle or by the shoulder blade that is severe enough to awaken her at night or make her cry out but she can t describe what the pain is like. These episodes come on suddenly, can happen at anytime and last from a couple of hours to a day or two. She says she just doesn t feel right and talks about her mother having died from heart problems. She has had an electrocardiogram, stress test and x-rays. The cardiologist says that test results only show a slight narrowing of the arteries from fat which is normal for her age and that there is no indication of a problem. She still complains of her symptons, says she just doesn t feel right and I can see her fear. it should also be noted that her mother died from heart problems and my mother has been on medication for high blood pressure since her early 20 s. I don t know if she should see another doctor, have different tests done or if this could be related to some other health issue. Can you advise what she should do?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In my opinion your mother should also consult a neurologist, perform a physical neurologic examination and some blood or other radiology (brain MRI) tests depending from the results of physical examination.
Considering her age, the hypertension and the symptoms, i think she might have had any transient ischemic attacks, but this should be confirmed by the neurologist.

Hope I have answered your query.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
