What Causes Collapsed Lung When On Treatment For Pneumonia?
my sister in law has been hospitalized for 2 weeks. she was diagnosed with mrsa and pneumonia and possible kidney damage, and her gallbladderis adffected. she has been on a respirator for 10 days and in icu. 2 days ago she had a (sp?). this morning she had a collapsed lung and turned blue. the brain stem recognized this and shut down the extremities until the doctor got there. I am at my brother s house while he is at the hospital. he called and asked question. he wants to know about what is going to happen now. what is the prognosis? she has endocarditis and pericarditis and now they found a hole in one of the lungs
Thanks for your question on HCM. I can understand your situation and problem. By your history and description, I think your sister in law is having severe pneumonia, with respiratory failure which leads to mechanical ventilation and ventilator induced pneumothorax (hole in the lung). All these events favours poor prognosis. Pneumothorax in ventilated patient is very very difficult to treat. It causes lung collapse and cyanosis (blue coloured skin). So ,sorry to say but she is not having good prognosis, as infection has spread in heart too. So better to discuss prognosis in depth with treating doctor.
