What Causes Compulsive Scalp Picking?

I had this numbness near my whorl, its been there for two years, the numbness never stops feeling alien so i have an uncontralabe urge to peel my scalp off, leaving it red and inflamed, no hair loss but the constant urges dont let it grow. I have my doubts about being scalp neuritis or scalp ringworm, ia it even one of them two?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi.
As per your case history of compulsive itching on scalp.
My treatment advice is -
1. Avoid scratching as it may worsen the condition. It is more about self discipline rather than disease.
2. Apply a mild antifungal plus steroid lotion like Candid - b lotion once daily as it will decrease itching.
3. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine once daily for 3 weeks.
4. Other treatment options are oral alprazolam, etizolam, fluoxetine given to stop urge to itch but only after consulting a dermatologist or psychiatrist.

Thanks.
Dr. Harshit bhachech.
MBBS, DDVL.
