What Causes Constant Diarrhea?

Hello Doctor, I am a 55 year old woman with type 2 diabetes. I am on metaformin 850mg 2wise a day. I have had constant diarrhea for over 4 years now. Sometimes 5 times a day. I am afraid to leave my house at times, and i have many accidents. I have had a colonocspy and the Doctor found nothing wrong there. The accidents or the feeling that I have to go is whenver i have any slight stress, for example, if i hear bad news, or something scares me, etc. . . can you help?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to be related to irritable bowel syndrome. You should see a gastrologist to confirm the diagnosis.

Meanwhile, some advices that I can give to you are:

- Take antimotility medicines - loperamide can help reduce diarrhea.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol.
- Eat fiber rich foods.
- avoid spicy foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
