What Causes Constipation After Taking Paracetamol For Pain?

My husband Paul is on a trial of Enzalutamide for prostate cancer. He had a knee operation 2 days ago which entailed scraping of the patella. He was given paracetamol/codeine tablets 500mgs for pain. As a result he became constipated on the second day. I went to the chemist and bought Koloxene which was sold over the counter. He took 2 a couple of hours ago and as yet has not had a result. He is concerned. Should we call a Locum? Kay

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms of your husband seem to be related to side effects of Codeine. I suggest you to take over-the-counter option laxative like Miralax. Drink liquids and eating a fiber rich diet.

I also recommend avoiding this medication in the future.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
