Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Constipation In Case Of Diverticulosis?
I have diverticulosis of the sigmoid and descending colon. Over the past few years I ve been having spasms and either extremely constipated or continuously going. Lately I ve been more constipated but sometimes I get better formed stools but tonight I got a bunch of balls. One GI said only to take Miralax if constipated while another said it s ok to take Metamucil. Any thoughts and for people with diverticulosis, do their stools come out abnormal?
Treatment of diverticulosis depends on severity of symptoms and presence of inflammation. Basically, there are 2 main lines of treatment:
- hydric diet including intravenous perfusions if severely ill. Otherwise orally: water, fruit juice, broth and ice pops- antibiotics monotherapy or combination therapy.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
